This lesson, designed for Black History Month and beyond, examines the impact of protest music, highlighting the contributions of Black artists.

 

The lesson includes:

 

  • Introduction to Protest Music: Introduce protest music by defining it and discussing its role in social change.

  • Class Analysis: Examine Kamala Harris's campaign video alongside Beyoncé's song "Freedom" to analyse their messages and impact.

  • Group Analysis Task: Students will work in groups on excerpts from various artists, including Sam Cooke, Queen Latifah, and Dave. They will use guiding questions to analyse the songs' themes and techniques.

  • Creative Group Task: Students will collaborate to create their own protest song, incorporating insights gained from the lesson.

 

This versatile lesson can be adapted for English, music, cross-curricular studies, or even form activities.
